The playoffs begin this week for a number of county schools.
No. 4 Greenbrier (16-1-1) will play host to Northgate (11-8-1) at 6 p.m. today in the first round of the girls soccer state playoffs. The teams had one common opponent, Woodward Academy, which the Lady Wolfpack defeated, 3-1. The Vikings lost twice to Woodward (1-3 and 0-3).
Third-ranked Lakeside (11-2-2) will play host to Woodward (8-11-2) today at Panther Stadium. The two teams tied 1-1 on Feb. 19.
Evans (12-2-1) will travel to Fayette County to play No. 10 Whitewater (11-6-2) today and Harlem will be on the road Friday.
In boys soccer, No. 6 Greenbrier (10-4-3) will play host to Sandy Creek (6-6-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday. Evans (12-5-1) will play host to Whitewater (10-8-1) on Thursday while Lakeside (5-7-5) must travel to play the No. 1 team in the state, McIntosh (17-2-1).
Soccer player recognized
Lakeside's Jenny Whitt was named the Georgia Soccer Coaches Association Class-AAAA Student Athlete of the Month. Whitt, a junior, has a 4.0 GPA and is president of her junior class and a member of the National Honor Society, the National Spanish Honor Society, the Math Honor Society and Students Against Destructive Decisions.
Area tennis teams are ranked
As the state tennis playoffs begin this weekend, a couple of area teams are ranked. Greenbrier comes in at No. 5 in the girls tennis poll. Lakeside is ninth in boys tennis.
Wrestler recognized
Lakeside wrestler Tim Mitchem was named to the Georgia Wrestling Coaches Association Dream Team at 130 pounds. The Dream Team is composed of one wrestler across all of the classifications for each weight class. Mitchem was 49-2 this season and won the state championship at 130 pounds.
