All Dan Hall could ever ask for was good weather and a turnout of about 10 teams for the inaugural Daniel Hall Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday at Jones Creek Golf Club.

The weather was beautiful for much of the day, and 17 teams participated in the inaugural tournament, which was designed to raise money for scholarship funds for local golfers and to benefit the Augusta Junior Golf Association.

The tournament was also a tribute to Hall's son, Daniel, who died in a car crash in 2003 while traveling to a golf tournament in Lincoln County.

Hall and Shane Williams, both Greenbrier golfers, died when the Ford Explorer Williams was driving caught a tire on the shoulder, went back across the road and into the ditch and rolled over multiple times. Michael and Matthew Barman both survived the crash.

"We still deal with Daniel's death every day. It is something that you think about all of the time," said Hall, who talked between tee shots. "But you try and get a positive out of a tragedy. This is going to be a great event to raise money for local golfers like Daniel who want to continue playing golf at the next level. It also gives us the chance to let everyone remember Daniel."

Hall teamed with his other son, Chris, and two other friends in the tournament that had a best-ball format.

Hall said his wife, Angela, was instrumental in recruiting numerous local businesses to sponsor the event.

"She was amazing during this process," said Hall. "She went door-to-door getting support for this tournament. We found out how many great people wanted to help us. A lot of people remember the accident and they were very gracious."

Hall said he believed that the scholarship money would be used in 2006 and would be chosen by a board.

"We want to do this thing right," he said. "We don't want to throw this thing together quickly. We want to make sure everything is perfect."
