As reported 23 years ago in the pages of The Columbia News and The Martinez-Evans Times, Wednesday, April 21, 1982:
Nunn to visit Democrats
The Columbia County Democratic Committee will sponsor a breakfast at West Lake Country Club on May 1, 1982, featuring Sam Nunn, Georgia's senior U.S. senator, as guest speaker.
According to William Cleveland, county committee chairman, "This will be the first time we have had the honor of having Sen. Nunn speak at a local fund-raiser. He is in great demand, and we are indeed fortunate to have someone of his caliber address the local Democratic Party."
A limited number of tickets are available. Reservations may be made by contacting Cleveland, Pat Hardaway or Edgar Clary III.
Science Fair winner
Ginny Starling, a fifth-grader at Martinez Elementary School, was one of the students in Columbia County to place first in the CSRA Science Fair in March. Her project demonstrated compatibility between soil and fertilizer, and competed against about 20 other projects in the intermediate level of applied science.
Ginny is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Starling, of Martinez.
