Virginia Anne Strong, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Strong and a 2003 graduate of Evans High School, was named to the Dean's List at Georgia Southern University for fall semester 2004. A member of Gamma Beta Phi, Virginia has been accepted into the Business Department.

Alabama State honors

Adrien Davis, of Martinez, has been named to the Honor Roll at Alabama State University for the spring semester. Davis, who achieved a grade point average between 3.00 and 3.49, was honored during the 2005 Honors Day Convocation.

Army exercise

Army Sgt. Maj. Donald M. Thomas participated in the Republic of Korea and U.S. Combined Forces Command's Reception, Staging, Onward Movement and Integration annual exercise, conducted in South Korea. He is the son of Vernon C. and Glenda D. Thomas, of Appling. The sergeant major graduated in 1976 from Harlem High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1981 from the University of Georgia.

GSU Honors Day

The following area students were recently recognized for an Honors Day ceremony at Georgia Southern University: Jessica Callan, of Evans, received the Kappa Delta Pi/Education Award; Emily Dabney, of Martinez, was among those listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; Lindsey Eck, of Evans, received an Excellent Scholarship Graduating Senior GPA 3.9 or higher at Georgia Southern and is among those listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; Sara Kavsak, of Evans, is among those listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; B. Miller, of Grovetown, received the Carolyn Joiner Memorial Scholarship; Kenneth Noe, of Evans, received the Philosophy Award; Stacy Shore, of Martinez, is among those listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; Robert Smith Jr., of Appling, is among those listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; Kevin Sweatman, of Harlem, is among those listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; Scott Tam, of Harlem, received the Mathematics Award and the Tutorial Center Scholarship; Tabetha Turner, of Martinez, is among those listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; Michelle Waller, of Martinez, is among those listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

SCAD Dean's List

The following local residents were named to the Dean's List at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah for the winter quarter 2005: Sara Keel, of Augusta, daughter of Brooks Keel and Marion Winter; Joanna Renner, of Evans, daughter of Gene Renner and Sharon Renner; Virginia Brannen, of Evans, daughter of Alfred Brannen; and Michael Dorsey, of Evans, son of Michael Dorsey.

Speech contest winners

The following Columbia County students received awards from Augusta State University at the school's 14th annual Speech Contest on March 29: Kathleen Muller, Jordan Mims and Elizabeth Davison, all of Evans; and, Mary Thurber, of Martinez.
