As reported 37 years ago in the pages of The Columbia News, Thursday, April 4, 1968:
New owners
The Columbia Publishing Co. assumes ownership and management of The Columbia News with this issue of the paper.
The Columbia County corporation is owned by John W. Lee, Thomas W. Hagler and Alvin Postell. All hold positions with Georgia Iron Works near Grovetown.
Lee will serve as president of the company and manager of the newspaper. Ron Argo, of Atlanta, a recent graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in journalism, will serve as editor of the News.
All present correspondents and writers of the newspaper will be retained, Lee said, and additional ones will be added as soon as possible "to give our readers complete coverage of all worthwhile news events in the county."
New police car
A new car for the Harlem Police Department will be ordered this week, according to Mrs. G.E. Pendergrass, Harlem city clerk.
Of the bids received, the lowest was from Culpepper Motors in Harlem on a 1968 Ford Custom two-door sedan. Other bids were received from H.M. Smith Ford, Inc., in Warrenton and Darrell Johnson, Inc., in Thomson.
June Diamond wins
The ninth annual Evans High School Touchdown Club Horse Show got under way last Saturday with some 28 classes competing for cash prizes and ribbons.
June Diamond, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Rex Lovette, took the Walking Horse title. Jack Johnson, of North Wilkesboro, N.C., rode the champion and also showed the winning Delight's Magic Boy for Mr. and Mrs. Link Spaenouck in the 3-year-old Walking Horse class and Call of the Will for Bill Tomlinson in the 2-year-old class.
Host Evans' only winner was Society's Come Again, owned by Ginger Fuller, in the Equitation Championship for riders 17 years old and under.
Player moves
Perry Dunn, of Appling, who was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates straight off the Columbia County baseball sandlots, will play second base for Gastonia in the Western Carolina Class A league.
Dunn, currently in Daytona Beach, Fla., where the Pirates hold spring training, has been hitting the ball well.
