The Director's Cup, awarded to each classification's best overall athletics program, recently released the new standings after the winter sports season. That season includes wrestling, swimming, basketball and competition cheerleading.
The Wolfpack finished seventh in the state in last year's rankings, which come from a composite score based on a system that awards points to a school for each team that makes the playoffs. More points can be awarded for how far the team goes into the playoffs.
Marist led Greenbrier 320-220 after the fall sports season and now has 530 points to Greenbrier's 290.
Woodward leapfrogged Greenbrier and has 350 points.
Woodland, the state cheerleading champions, and wrestling champions Ringgold round out the top five.
"It feels good to know you have one of the top programs in the state," Greenbrier athletic director Mickey Derrick said.
"It is important to us, and we are only behind two private schools. It is a testament to the coaches and athletes we have here at Greenbrier."
Greenbrier's biggest point-getter was the girls basketball team, which earned 40 points for its trip to the state quarterfinals in Columbus, Ga.
The boys team also added 10 points for a playoff trip. Greenbrier didn't get any points last year for basketball.
"The performance of our basketball teams definitely helps," Derrick said. " ... That will boost our standings at the end of the year."
Evans had a big season as far as points go.
The Knights received 40 points for both boys and girls swimming and an additional 20 for cheerleading. Evans is tied for 17th place with 140 points.
Lakeside also had a strong showing, gaining 70 points. Harlem received 10 points for cheerleading.
