Dogs maul woman

A 71-year-old Martinez woman who was attacked by two boxer dogs was listed in good condition Friday at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Danielle Wong Moores, a hospital spokeswoman, said.

Grace D. Sleister, of the 200 block of Old Evans Road, sustained bites to much of her body during the attack in her Casa Bella neighborhood off Old Evans Road.

"It was bad, real bad," said Linda Fulmer, the manager of Columbia County Animal Care and Control. "She has bites to both her arms and legs and her head and face."

The incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday when Sleister said she was walking in the 200 block of Anneswood Drive in Martinez.

She said two dogs ran from a neighboring yard and attacked her. The dogs, owned by Robert Joseph Brechtel, 60, who lives on Anneswood Drive, were seized by Animal Control officers and placed in quarantine.

The following accounts were taken from reports filed with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

Carport fire reported

A case of arson was reported to police Monday after an Evans man said someone started a fire under his carport.

The man, who lives in the 4500 block of Anderson Court, said someone set fire to a piece of paper inside a glass flower vase. He also said someone set fire to the top of a white foam cooler, the report states. The man said he later discovered that someone had defecated in a plastic bucket and left it in the yard beside the carport.

Identity theft

An Evans man told police on Monday that someone had used his credit card to purchase more than $1,000 in unknown merchandise from a foreign photography studio.

The man said someone charged $1,709.98 to his card to make a purchase from Nur-sen, a photography studio in Turkey, the report states.

The man told police he does not know how someone got his credit card number. He added that he does not know anyone in Turkey and has never traveled there. The man said he canceled the credit card as soon as he was notified about the charges.

Shoplifting arrest

An Evans woman was arrested on a shoplifting charge Tuesday after police say she tried to steal $28 worth of prescription drugs.

Stephanie Alexis Meyer, 28, of the 4400 block of Savannah Lane, was arrested after police say she took Phentermine pills, which are used for weight loss.

Meyer was shopping at the Wal-Mart, located at 4471 Washington Road in Evans, when police say she placed the pills in her purse and then purchased several miscellaneous items, a sheriff's office report states.

A Wal-Mart loss prevention employee acquired a warrant for shoplifting by Judge Jack Farmer. Meyer was arrested and transported to the Columbia County Detention Center 10:50 p.m. Tuesday. She was released early Wednesday morning.
