Time is running out for the annual 4-H Vidalia onion fund raiser, and Shirley Williamson, Columbia County's 4-H extension agent youth coordinator, says it's a sale no one should miss.
Vidalia onions will be sold, in a variety of bag sizes, by 4-H members until Tuesday. The cost is $10 a bag.
"Sooner or later, 4-H will be known for selling onions just like Girl Scouts are known for selling cookies," Williamson said about the fund raiser, which includes about 500 4-H participants. "It's our trademark in Columbia County."
In addition to the sale, a 4-H Vidalia onion cookbook, featuring 100 recipes from appetizers to deserts is now on sale for $8.
Proceeds from the sales, Williamson said, will go toward sponsoring 4-H programs in the classroom, prize money for top sellers, summer camp and scholarship money.
"We just want the community to know about the sale," she said.
"We ask that they be generous when they see kids selling onions."
