Basic training
Army Reserve Pvt. Paul W. Park has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky. During the nine-week training period, the trainee received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, traditions and core values. He is the son of Jeff Park, of Martinez, and a 2004 graduate of Harlem High School.
Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jacob C. Rumbaugh, son of Judith D. Rumbaugh, of Martinez, and Jamie C. Rumbaugh, of North Augusta, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and was meritoriously promoted to his current rank. Rumbaugh successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. Rumbaugh is a 2004 graduate of Lakeside High School.
Combat training
Evans High School senior Jason Barnett has received a four-year Army ROTC scholarship worth more than $80,000 to the University of Alaska. Jason is a three-year letterman on the Knight Rifle team and a four-year letterman on the Knight Raider team. He represented Evans High at Boys State last summer and is a member of the French National Honor Society. Jason also is a cadet major in JROTC and serves as battalion adjutant. He plans to major in foreign language in college. Jason is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Barnett, of Evans. He is the 19th Evans cadet in the past 10 years to receive an ROTC scholarship.

Marine Corps Sgt. Brad A. Pearson, son of Michele G. and Terry A. Pearson, of Martinez, recently practiced combat training procedures, while assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12, homebased at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. The training provided the Marines and sailors of Pearson's unit with the basic skills to survive in combat. The squadron simulated ambushes of convoys, defensive positions and offensive tactics. Pearson is a 1994 graduate of Lakeside High School and joined the Marine Corps in March 2000.
Marine Corps Cpl. Thomas A. Silas, son of Vivian L. and Willie A. Silas, of Evans, recently practiced combat training procedures, while assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12, homebased at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. Silas is a 2000 graduate of Evans High School and joined the Marine Corps in February 2002.
Dean's List
Peter J. Borchelt, of Evans, was named to the Dean's List for the spring semester at Virginia Military Institute. Borchelt is majoring in mechanical engineering and is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Joel P. Borchelt.
