I have been reading with great interest and more than a little confusion over the county commissioners and planning commission members' concern over the Georgia Department of Transportation's desire to place concrete medians on Washington Road in Evans.
The medians can be an aesthetically pleasing road addition that would go a long way toward that ever-elusive "Hilton Head-like" image that often gets talked about.
The problem is not the medians. They would likely have turn lanes cut into them to allow smooth traffic flow. The medians could be planted with flowers and shrubs and could be a place for street lights.
The problem is that the commissioners and planning committee members allow every new business that comes along to have direct access to Washington Road. They should be forcing more common access points that can be easily controlled with lights, such as what was done with Wal-Mart.
Columbia County should consider Washington Road frontage in Evans a valuable county resource, and should control direct access to it as such. To do any less is simply a guarantee that Evans will become the next Martinez.
