Gail, the daughter of Paul and Mary Filpus-Luyckx, of Augusta, is taking Advanced Placement English, AP Modern European History, AP Calculus, Honors Anatomy, Psychology and Honors Performance Lab, which is a theater course.

After high school, Gail said, she plans to attend the University of South Carolina and major in biology with a minor in theater.

"I want to be a high school biology teacher and teach an elective in Marine biology if I get a job at a coastal school," she said.

Sheila Owen, a science teacher who has taught at Augusta Prep for 16 years and also taught Gail in 11th grade AP Biology, said Gail is a phenomenal student.

"She has a great memory, and she's very innovative," Owen said.

She said that she was shocked when she learned Gail had named her a STAR teacher.

"There are so many good teachers at this school, and she could have picked anyone of them," the teacher said.
