While the county draws closer to completing the construction of a new Evans library late this year, a Columbia County philanthropic group is raising money for the library's enhancement.
Friends of Columbia County Libraries has organized three fund-raising events for individuals and businesses to donate money that will help with purchasing learning material and a sculpture that will be used as decoration for the 41,000-square-foot building.
"The reason why we're having (the three fund-raisers) is because a few people have called the library wanting to know how they can donate (to) the new library," said Norma Hickman, the group's past president. "That's what gave us the impatience to go ahead and set something up, so that people, no matter how much they want to give, would have an opportunity to give."
Among the three fund-raisers is something called the Buy a Book Fund, through which officials are able to purchase one book with every $25 donation. In a second fund-raiser, called The Building Fund, a donation of $250 is able to help provide educational DVDs, large print books, a modern check out system, scanners, color printers, multi-media computer enhancements and CD ROM databases.
Then there's the Bronze Sculpture Fund, through which a $1,000 individual donation will help defray the cost of a life-size "Children Reading" sculpture that will be placed in the library.
Hickman said that with every $3,000 donation, the donor will receive an 18-inch desktop sculpture and recognition on a plaque that will be placed in the library.
Money collected from each fund, Hickman said, will be donated to the library in November. But she said the group will be "open to giving after November."
"Our only purpose is supporting the library with both physical work and with whatever money we can make," she said of the Friends of Columbia County Libraries, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983.
The group, she said, provides services to Gibbs Memorial Library in Evans, Euchee Creek Library in Grovetown and Harlem Library.
The new library that is now in need of funding is under construction near the Evans Government Complex behind the Columbia County Justice Center and is scheduled to open in April 2006.
