Members of a newly formed teenage political group in Columbia County say they're aiming to get young people active in their community and in the political process.

"A lot of people don't know what goes on (in government)," said Andrew Sickafoose, 16, a vice chairman for the Columbia County Teenage Republicans. "It's important to get kids involved."

On Monday, the 15-member group, which was chartered this past November, will hold its first public meeting at 6 p.m. at the Columbia County Republican Headquarters, located at the corner of Pleasant Home and Old Petersburg roads in Martinez.

Harlem Mayor Scott Dean will be the guest speaker. Children ages 10 to 12 can become an associate member for $5 for one year. Teenagers ages 13 to 19 can join the group for one year for $7.

Members of the assembly say the purpose of the meeting is to increase membership countywide and stress the importance of political participation among young people.

"We want to help with voter apathy," Brian Martin, the group's adviser, said. "We want to see students learn leadership skills."

Ashley Greenwood, the group's chairwoman, said the group is a good opportunity to get involved.

"We will focus on community service projects," she said, adding that the group also will help with political campaigns and more projects in the future. "We want people to know who we are, and we also want them to know that we are not just a political group."

As more young people join the group, members hope, more teenagers will realize their political efficacy.

"We want young people to be educated when it comes to the people and their issues," Sickafoose said. "And once they are educated, then politicians will be able to hear our voice and make changes in government that address our concerns."
