Parents should speak out on proposal for early elementary release day

Editor:

I am writing to try to make more people aware of what the Columbia County School Board will be voting on very soon: the early release days.

The proposed changes, from what I understand, would be for all elementary schools to close at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, every week. They are going to add 15 minutes a day onto the rest of the week. This is so the teachers can have more work time without the children being there. I believe that the homes in which both parents work are already taxed enough by adding the two long breaks during the school year, and now they will have to find or possibly pay for more child care on Wednesday afternoons.

They have talked about having child care at the schools after 1 p.m., but no bus transportation home at 3:30 p.m. If this is a matter that will affect you, please voice your opinion to your school board representative. If we do not speak up, it will certainly pass.
