As reported 37 years ago in the pages of The Columbia News, Thursday, January 11, 1968.

Speech project

Two more schools have been added to the Speech Correction Program, which began three years ago and originally served five county schools.

Harriet McKnight serves as the county speech therapist. She treats speech impediments, including defects of articulation, stuttering problems, voice disorders and delayed language.

"It is the hope of the Board of Education that the program will be extended to provide its services to all the children in Columbia County," said John P. Blanchard, superintendent of schools.

Tree program

Mrs. Al Nagy, chairwoman of the Flowering Tree Committee of the Columbia County Beautification Program, has announced that a shipment of dogwood and redbud trees had arrived. She also asks to receive orders for Crape Myrtles through Jan. 17, 1968.

Planting flowering trees is a big part of the Beautification Program. Nagy explains that if everyone would plant flowering trees, we would have a beautiful community overnight.
