Events that highlighted Columbia County in 2004 included an ice storm that cut power to thousands of residents (clockwise from top), a ban on smoking enacted by county commissioners; Evans native and former University of Georgia star Reese Hoffa competing in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece; voters standing in long lines for early voting; and the Greenbrier women's softball team winning the state title.

Former State School Superintendent Linda Schrenko has been indicted on allegations that she misused state funds. Two others have been indicted along with her, and two more have pleaded guilty.
