As reported 50 years ago in the pages of The Columbia News, Thursday, Dec. 16, 1954:
Farmers honored
Columbia County farmers were honored at the Monday night meeting of the Harlem Rotary Club, which was well-attended not only by Columbia County farmers but by those from surrounding areas. There were 38 in attendance.
The occasion was planned especially to honor the "Farm Family of the Year" in Columbia County, Mr. and Mrs. Bass Crawford. A visiting Rotarian was Jack Martin of Augusta.
The speaker of the evening was L.W. Eberheardt, with the Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station in Athens, who spoke on the aid given to farmers by the Station, and other lines of particular interest to the entire group.
The committee who served the group was composed of the following members of the Women's Club: Mrs. Randolph Lamkin, Mrs. Walter Bell, Mrs. H.O. Hatcher, Mrs. George Walton and Marian Baughn.
Bridge guests
Mrs. Marion Luckey was hostess to the young matrons' Bridge Club on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 9, 1954, at her lovely home on Trippe Street.
Mrs. E.D. Clary and Mrs. Evan Kelley were invited guests.
Several progressions of the game were enjoyed and Mrs. Randolph Lamkin was found to have won the high score award.
The next meeting of the Club will be for the Christmas party, when their husbands join the group and gifts are exchanged. A Christmas tree will be featured.
