Singers will welcome the Yule season

Posted: Sunday, December 12, 2004

Members of the Columbia County Choral Society will celebrate the Yuletide season to the sounds of music in their seventh annual Christmas concert.

The performance, called Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Evans, on Washington Road at Belair Road. Admission costs $6 for students and seniors and $8 for general admission.

Sylvia Head, a member and past president of the group, said the performance features a medley of holiday songs, some of which will be accompanied by organs, conga drums and a brass quartet.

"We have quite a variety of music," she said. "The primary focus of this concert is on the Christmas portion of the Messiah.''

Head said the Choral Society's current director, W. Isaac Holmes, decided to dedicate the concert to Jacques Kearns, the group's founder and director emeritus. Head said it was only befitting to honor Kearns because he arranged the old hymn of Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent.

In the spirit of Christmas, Head said, the group expects a show filled with fun for the whole family.

"Our group seems to enjoy singing so much, I think it's contagious," she said. "A lot of times (a concert) puts people in the mood for Christmas.''

Tickets are available from Choral Society members. For more information, call Susan Osborn, the group's executive director at 650-2311.
