I applaud The News-Times for publishing data that shows county property taxes paid by companies operating in the county. What was interesting to me about the data was the relatively low rates enjoyed by these companies.
Knowing that my neighbors and I pay annual residential property taxes equivalent to about 1 percent of our assessed valuation, I was intrigued to learn that these companies pay far less than the residential rate -- most paying half the rate that residential property owners do.
In an era where we hear so much about a flat tax, and how beneficial it would be, can we perhaps begin right here in our county and allow these large corporations to pull their fair share of the property tax burden? But, I suppose, if we were do that, we'd lose our pro-business reputation. Oh, what a travesty that would be!
Instead, we burden the residential property owners with a higher property tax rate, and give tax breaks to the large corporations! So much for true flat-tax reform!
