As reported 28 years ago in the pages of The Columbia News and The Martinez-Evans Times, Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1976:

Rezoning denied

The crowd of Holiday Park residents attending the meeting applauded the unanimous decision by the Columbia County Planning and Zoning Commission in a controversial issue regarding a tract of land adjacent to the Holiday Park subdivision.

The Planning Commission denied the application from Edward Baldwin and Otis Cartledge to rezone the 3.63-acre tract on Columbia Road from a general residential district to a neighborhood commercial zoning.

Lake Russell lawsuit

Dr. S. Allan Stocks of the Friends of the Savannah River last week announced that the National Wildlife Federation filed suit Nov. 16 in Greenville, S.C., district court to enjoin further construction of the Richard B. Russell Dam on the grounds that the Corps of Engineers has not complied with federal laws in several areas.

The suit is filed to require the Corps to meet water quality, wildlife habitat and environment standards prior to further construction of Russell Dam and from further operation of Hartwell and Clarks Hill dams.
