Editor:
I wish to express my support of the initiative for the county to purchase the field owned by Doctors Hospital behind the Evans Kroger.
The value that land would bring to our community is immense. Being so close to the new library, it is all the more valuable as a town common. With a little landscaping (please ask for volunteer labor to do it -- I'll even bring a shade tree!) and a public restroom, it could be the best thing this town has to offer.
When I lived in England, every small town had a commons, an open field where parents would take the baby for a stroll, kids would pick up a game of soccer, dogs would catch Frisbees, and neighbors met and got to know each other. It was one of those things that was free to do and added so much to the daily quality of life. It made a town into a community.
I know full well that Doctors Hospital would make more money by developing the land, but if we as a community speak up and make our wishes known, it would be a tremendous goodwill gesture on their part. The county should also look into trading commercially valuable land from the outlying area for this centrally located property.
What do you want to see there? Another bank or professional building, or a kid flying a kite?
