Barn will be show's backdrop

Museums and art galleries might be common places to find an artist's work displayed. But when it comes to art exhibits, members of the Artists Guild of Columbia County say they have no qualms about displaying their work in a barn.

Nancy Cannon shows off some of the art she will display in the Art in the Barn exhibition, sponsored by the Artists Guild of Columbia County. The event will take place from 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the Barn at Riverwood Plantation.

On Saturday, Artists Guild members will sponsor an art exhibit fund-raiser, called Art in the Barn, from 7-9 p.m at the Barn at Riverwood Plantation, located at 5123 Riverwood Parkway in Evans. Admission will cost $5.

The event will feature artists, a silent auction, music and a wine and cheese tasting, said Nancy Cannon, the guild's president.

"This will be our first official exhibit," said Cannon, adding that her group decided to hold the event at the barn for convenience. "It just seemed like a good place. It's roomy, and right now we're having trouble finding places that we can show.''

Cannon said the exhibit will include all types of artwork such as paintings, acrylic, oils, pencils, charcoal and more.

Cannon said her group, which has about 30 members, will display five pieces of their artwork throughout the barn. She also said 20 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Artists Guild and the remaining money will go to each individual artist.

From sculptures, potters and graphic artists to a needlepoint artist, the group is very diverse, Cannon said.

"We are a very eclectic group," she said. "We have people who are in their 30s to their 70s. A lot of this is something on the side that they like to do."
