Too little discussion of state constitutional amendments

Years ago I read a column in The Augusta Chronicle written by someone whose name I have forgotten, stating that we survive in spite of ourselves and not because of ourselves.

I must confess: I attended only three public forums that were poorly attended, and only polite questions were asked. I have not seen or heard any media discussion of the straw-poll vote for Columbia County, and only slight mention of one state constitutional amendment - no mention of the other state amendment. In past years there have been numerous amendments to our state constitution with no more media attention than this year.

Before the public votes, should they not know why the amendment is necessary and if the language takes care of the necessity or provides a field day for attorneys? Unlike the group of Columbia County citizens who knew nothing about the "rain tax" until it had passed, there are those of us who try to pay attention to the media for information.

Elected officials come and go (some stay too long), but the results of their actions seem to linger forever. The state of our nation does not originate in Washington, D.C.; it has its beginnings in every city hall, county courthouse and state capital.
