Free legal help

The Georgia Legal Services Program staff will be in Columbia County from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. today at the Bessie Thomas Senior Center, 5913 Euchee Creek Drive, in Grovetown. The staff will meet with people age 60 and older, who want free legal help, on a first come, first served basis. For information, call 721-2327.

Hoffa to speak

Olympic competitor Reese Hoffa will speak to third-, fourth- and fifth-grade classes at 9:45 a.m. Friday at the Evans Elementary Gym, 628 Gibbs Road, in Evans. He will demonstrate throwing the shot put and discuss the importance of good health and exercise. For information, call 863-1202.

GOP women meet

Author and media consultant Phil Kent will be the guest speaker at the Thursday meeting of the Greater Columbia County Republican Women from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the King Buffet on Washington Road in Evans. For information, call 854-8470.

Best of Augusta

Augusta Magazine will hold the seventh annual Best of Augusta Bash 6 p.m. Thursday at the National Science Center's Fort Discovery. Tickets cost $12 in advance and are available at The News-Times office. Tickets cost $17 at the door. Farm Bureau meeting

The Columbia County Farm Bureau will hold its annual dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Woodman of the World Building in Harlem. For information, call 556-6258.

Fort Gordon building auction

Fort Gordon will hold an auction 1 p.m. Saturday in Building 2222, 11th Avenue near Gate 3. Twenty buildings will be auctioned to buyers who agree to reclaim at least 50 percent of the reusable materials. There will be a brief building tour at 8 a.m.
