As reported 13 years ago in The Columbia News-Times, Sept. 25, 1991:

Sister city signed

Amid the sounds of automatic cameras and emotional applause, Columbia County Commission Chairman Mike Graybill and Mayor Jerzy Gwizdz of Nowy Sacz, Poland, signed the first internal Sister City Covenant in county history Monday evening.

Lillian Johnson, vice chairman of the commission, and Piotr Pawnik, vice mayor of Nowy Sacz, also signed the identical, bilingual documents that will hang in the commissioners' office here and in the City Hall of Nowy Sacz in Poland.

Police chief sought

A local man, who retired two years ago as assistant police chief of the Thomson Police Department, is the latest person to apply for the vacant police chief post in Harlem.

The applicant was identified by Mayor James B. Lewis Sr. as Carlos Coulson, a Harlem resident who served as assistant police chief in Thomson from 1976 until his retirement from the force in 1989.

Another recent applicant for the post of police chief in Harlem, which became vacant with the recent unexpected death of John A. Barreras, is Edgebert Wilson, according to City Clerk Jean Dove.

New assistant coach

David Miller is the new assistant football coach at Lakeside High School. After spending four years at Richmond Academy, three of them as head coach of the Musketeers, Miller is working closely with the defensive backs and with the offense in general for the Panthers.

Miller teaches physics at Lakeside, and has 10 years of coaching experience.

Software donation

Southern Bell is donating $17,500 in computer software to area schools as part of their commitment to education.

Southern Bell's district manager for corporate affairs, Merle Temple, presented the software to Superintendent Tucker Vaughn, administrative assistant Connie Davis and Blue Ridge Elementary Assistant Principal Charles Henderson.

"The software includes programs such as desktop publishing, financial, time and file management and information processing," said Temple. "The software should facilitate internal communication and aid administrative tasks."
