Rexer received her undergraduate degree from Augusta College and her master's in special education from Georgia Southern. Most of her teaching career has been spent at Columbia Middle.

She also has taught in Jefferson County and at Evans Elementary, Grovetown Elementary and Martinez Elementary.

"I enjoy working with the type of student I work with because I get to work more closely with them, often one-on-one, than you do with regular education students," she said. "Being chosen Teacher of the Year was a surprise, because I don't feel like I do anything more outstanding than any other teacher at CMS.

"I enjoy working with middle-school students because they change so much in the three years that they are in middle school. It is interesting to see the changes in them, both physical and mental."
