"It is truly an honor to have been chosen from such an outstanding group of educators," she said.

Before coming to Blue Ridge, Coia taught at Harlem Middle School, in Upson County and in Fort Worth, Texas.

She is beginning her 16th year of teaching fifth grade at Blue Ridge Elementary.

During the past 20 years, she has taught both fifth- and sixth-grade pupils.

"It is such a pleasure to teach this age group because they are becoming more independent thinkers and are asking questions about the world around them," she said. "They are beginning to realize that they have the ability to make a real difference in our world."
