National Guard graduates
An Aiken-Augusta Swim League alumnus, Kristen Schlegal, has been
chosen as the leagues new program director. She has been a coach for more than 10 years and is in her sixth year of coaching the league. She began coaching it after graduating from the University of Maryland. At Maryland, she
lettered four years as a member of the swim team and was captain for two years. Schlegal was an ACC champion finalist three years in a row.

Richard K. Brewer Jr. of Martinez and Heather J. Stanton of Grovetown are set to graduate from the Georgia national Guard-sponsored Youth Challenge Academy August 29 in Macon, Ga.
Dean's list
Christopher Brooks Hamilton, of Martinez, has been named to the summer 2004 Dean's list at Valdosta State University.
President's list
Tarsa M. Andres, of Grovetown, has been named to the President's list for the 2004 summer term at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.
Red Cross awards
The following Columbia County residents have recently received awards from the American Red Cross: Chapter Chairman's Award - Beth Evans; Health and Safety Services Award - Mike Mann; Disaster Services Award - Curt and Patty Strickland; The Jack B. Patrick Volunteer Service Award - Dr. Marilyn Willis; and the Mary Lou Reynolds Award - Anne D. Trotter.
Medical College attendant
Erik James Elwood, son of James T. and Sharon B. Elwood, is attending his first year at Penn State College of Medicine. Erik is a graduate of Augusta Preparatory School and Swarthmore College.
Mentor program
Thomas P. Bradford was on the dean's list at Augusta State University for spring 2004 semester. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bradford, of Evans, and the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Herndon and Mrs. Juanita Bradford, of Evans. His major is
biology and middle grade education in math and science.

Zachary Zapata, of Evans, has been chosen to participate in the Georgia Education Mentorship Program at Georgia College & State University. Zapata, a sophomore majoring in biology at Georgia College & State, is the son of Mike and Debbie Zapata, of Evans. Zachary is a graduate of Greenbrier High School, where he was involved with the tennis team, the Student Board for Academic Success, the National Honor Society, Beta Club and the Columbia County Sheriff's Office Cadet Corps.
