Banks honored

Augusta Christian Schools' quarterback Lee Banks was named Player of the Week by the South Carolina Independent Schools Association for the opening week of the season.

Banks threw for 66 yards and two touchdowns to go with 87 yards and a score on the ground.

Banks led the Lions to a 28-24 win over previously top-ranked Colleton Prep.

Softball tryouts

The 12 and under Georgia Rockers girls fastpitch softball team is looking for several players for the 2005 season. Tryouts are Sept. 18. For more information, call Tom Tracy at 860-1917 or Darrell Hampson at 868-8546.

Hockey clinics

Beginner ice hockey clinics are being held at the Augusta Ice Sports Center. The clinics will run Saturdays throughout the month. The clinics are open to ages 4-12. For more information call, 863-0061.

Softball tryouts

Tennis tournament

Petersburg Racquet Club will be the host of the 2004 Banana Open Tennis Tournament Thursday-Sunday . Players will compete to qualify for the Banana Open Challenge in Hilton Head Island, S.C., Sept. 30-Oct. 3.

Divisions are Men's and Women's Singles and Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

Cost is $30 for first event, and $15 for the second event. Deadline for entry is Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. For more information, call 860-9288.

The 14 and under Grease Lightning Fastpitch travel team will hold tryouts Saturday for the 2004-05 season.
