Local teams win
The Martinez-Evans Senior League All Stars beat Gainesville 9-6 in the finals of the District VI playoffs at Grovetown. Jeff Wilson had three singles to pace the Martinez-Evans victory, while David Gay hit a two-run homer and a single. The team later was eliminated in state playoffs by Midway, 7-4.
The Martinez-Evans Little League All Stars won the Area II championship by beating Cornelia, Athens and Hartwell. Members of the team are Jimmy Shead, Reid Henderson, Doug Pyle, Pete Alewine, Ricky Baker, Walter Taylor, Ronnie Williams, Bill Knapp, Mack Garnett, Greg Godfrey, Donnie Berry and Larry McCord.
The Appling-Grovetown-Harlem Little League All Stars defeated the Athens-America All Stars 9-0 with a no-hitter pitched by Jim Ramsey, and then won the Area I Tournament by beating Elbert County 13-1. AGH players include Daniel Morris, Nehemiah Douglas, Roy Worley Jr., Jim Hamilton Jr., Douglas Morris, Marion Jones, Johnny Whiteside, John Morris, Ralph Tanksley, Jim Ramsey, Dexter Chaphin, Larry Morrison, David Boiter, Larry Morris Jr. and Alonzo Dunn.
Art show
Local artist Eva Hall Thompson will be displaying her original paintings in a one-woman show at The Et Cetera Shoppe on Washington Road in Martinez.
Thomson has studied pastel portraiture with the late Robert Allen Davis and Barbara Reed Davis.
Towers to open
St. John Towers, a 15-story apartment building for the elderly in Augusta, will be completed in November 1971, offering residence opportunities to persons of all faiths and races, 62 and older.
The apartment complex is another addition to Wesley Homes Inc., a non-profit corporation sponsored by the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Project complete
John A. Leverett, a first-year dental student at the Medical College of Georgia and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Leverett Sr. of Martinez, has just completed a month-long project dealing with the possible correlation of dental care problems with low-income areas of population.
