The upcoming election for the Superior Court judgeship is supposed to be a non-partisan race. Not surprisingly, the political party affiliation of candidates was raised as an issue at a recent meeting of the Columbia County Republican Party.

My take is that this race should be about values and qualifications -- that is to say, who is the candidate best fit to serve the Superior Court as the principal domestic relations judge?

Above all, this race should not be about political labels. That is why it is established as a non-partisan constitutional office.

While each of the candidates bring experience and qualifications to the table, in my view, the most able candidate is Sheryl Jolly. Her tenure as solicitor of the Richmond County State Court has prepared her for this role.

More importantly, I have seen her personal values surface in her work in the State Court. Sheryl Jolly is about justice being administered consistently and with appropriate compassion. She is about finding ways to teach youthful offenders the right values, not to simply punish them.

Her integrity and sense of duty as an officer of the court has served our community well.
