I want to thank Sheriff Clay Whittle for the outstanding job he is doing as our sheriff, and urge Columbia County voters to support him in the upcoming July primary. Low crime rates translate into better quality of life for a community. Under his leadership the overall crime rate has dropped 26 percent even as the population has increased more than 17 percent. In fact, our crime rate is only 52.6 percent of the state average and 57.4 percent of the national average.
He accomplished this with only 3.19 employees per 1,000 citizens. This is only 72.5 percent of the national average of 4.4 employees per 1,000 citizens for suburban sheriff's offices. This has helped keep the per capita cost of law enforcement in our County to a low of $92.85. To put this feat into perspective, Forsyth County spends $148.95, Richmond County is at $147.58, Rockdale County is at $115.74 and Fayette County is at $112.66.
His department has also been re-accredited for the second time by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. His department is one of only a few departments in the state to meet the Commission's rigorous standards on a continuous basis.
When you add it all up, under Sheriff Clay Whittle's leadership, our crime rate is little more than half of the national average while manpower requirements are only 72.5 percent of the national average, and per capita costs are one of the lowest for a similar size community in Georgia. No wonder our quality of life is one of the best in the state. We need to keep good, experienced and proven leadership in the Sheriff's Office. Please vote for Clay Whittle for sheriff.
