Publisher named
The management of The Columbia News is proud to announce the appointment of Jay M. Jaffe of Augusta as the editor and publisher of The Columbia News. He will join the paper on June 21, 1970.
In making the announcement, M.T. (Buddy) Gray, president of the Columbia Publishing Co., said We certainly feel that Mr. Jaffe will be able to make many contributions to our newspaper, in our continuing efforts to better serve the people of Columbia County.
Summer reading starts
The Columbia County Board of Education has applied for a pre-school and remedial reading program for the summer of 1970 under Title 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Depending on receipt of federal funds, the program will begin June 15, 1970, and extend for six weeks.
Johns dedication
Dedication of the Johns Building and a program honoring Mr. and Mrs. Otis Johns was held Sunday, May 31, 1970, in front of the Johns Building on the Grovetown Elementary campus in Grovetown.
Mr. and Mrs. Johns, long-time residents of Columbia County, were honored as both being outstanding leaders in the field of education and community services.
Tax reduction planned
The Columbia County Board of Education anticipates a four-mill reduction in taxes on the present digest as a result of partial payment on the entitlement for funds under Public Law 874.
School Board Chairman William S. Jackson and Superintendent John Pierce Blanchard recently conferred with officials in Washington, D.C., on the status of funds under Public Law 874 for Fiscal Year 1970.
A tentative budget of $3,019,763 for the 1970-71 school year was approved by the Board of Education at the June meeting. School population increased by 9.2 percent, during the school year, and is expected to increase approximately the same next year.
Outstanding athlete
Baxter Bailey, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul B. Bailey, was presented the Outstanding Athlete Award at the Augusta Preparatory School Annual Athletic Banquet at the Town Towers.
Cadettes camp out
Harlems Girl Scout Cadettes enjoyed a weekend of camping at the CSRA Girl Scout Camp at Tanglewood in Martinez. The girls had a good time while learning new outdoor skills as well as sharing their own accomplishments with one another.
