Perfect attendance

Shirley Whitaker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Weldon Whitaker of Harlem, has had perfect attendance through nine years of school. She is a sophomore at Harlem High School.

Dearing children visit

Mrs. W.M. Black, teacher of the first and second grades in the Dearing High School, brought her pupils to Harlem on Monday in a school bus driven by Jerry L. Reese for a period of recreation, and gave them the thrill of riding back to Dearing on the 1:10 Georgia train.

While here the group was refreshed with ice cream at Whiddon's Pharmacy, which filled their cups of joy to the brim.

Savings bonds drop

Columbia County's purchases of United States Savings Bonds amounted to $2,188 for the first four months of this year, L.I. Prather, county bond chairman, announced recently.

Purchases should have been $11,700, according to a report from the Federal Reserve office in Atlanta.

Lincoln County, said to have a comparable population and income, purchased $23,376 in the same period.

Harlem beats Dearing

The Harlem Rams defeated Dearing with a score of 13-5 in an all-out battle Sunday afternoon. Kenneth Moore pitched a nine-inning victory for the Rams.

Academic honors

Sara Anne Whitaker of Harlem has been named secretary of the Homecon Club at the University of Georgia.

Everett Clark Kuglar of Evans, who is in the upper 5 percent of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia, was cited for "achievement in scholarship" recently during Honors Day.

Mary Polatty Blanchard of Evans and Louise King Askew of Grovetown are candidates for graduation during the 63rd annual commencement exercises at the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville.

Wanda Hancock of Evans was received into Pi Tau Chi, an honorary society, at the University of Georgia. Bobby Whitaker of Harlem was inducted into Aghon, the agricultural honor society at UGA.

Baking contest

Becky Holliman won the junior 4H baking contest at Harlem High School. She will compete soon with girls from other schools in the county.
