The Augusta Christian girls and boys track teams wrapped up successful seasons, both winning firsts in the region, while AC runner Rebekah Madebach set a new state record in competition April 30 and May 1 in Albany, Ga.
The girls track team out ran, out threw and out jumped the competition during their first place finish in the Georgia Independent School Associations AAA State Meet.
In the process, they met some goals set earlier in the season, said Coach Keith Walton.
Those goals included winning the region, which was their first in division AAA, qualifying as many girls as possible - they had six and one alternate - and winning the state.
"My coaching philosophy is that we go out and do our best," said Walton, whose team did their best while collecting 86 points in the state meet, defeating the second place finisher, Stratford, by 14 points.
Rebekah Madebach finished the 3,200-meter race in a fleeting 11:15.52, breaking the state record that had stood since 1988.
She also garnered a first place in the 800-meter race with 2:23.008 and won sixth in the triple jump.
Sarah Madebach got her moments in the limelight, too, as she earned a state title in the 1,600-meter race with 5:13.9. She also won second in the 3,200, backing up her twin sister in case another team thought of going for the gold in that grueling event.
Other stellar performances include Eve Machovec, whose throw of 36'11-3/4" in the shot put and 116'10" in the discus earned her first place state titles.
Shanice Broadwater did her part for the team, with a runner up title in the long jump as well as the 200-meter dash. She also earned fifth in the 100-meter dash.
Virginia Wright earned sixth in the shot put, and the team placed second in the 1,600 relay.
Augusta Christian boys, who brought home their fourth straight regional championship earlier in April, placed third in the state behind First Presbyterian and Riverside Military Academy.
"I was very proud of our kids," said Coach Bruce Lane. "I was pleased by their effort in the meet and all year long."
Coach Lane said team members had goals of placing among the top three teams, which they did, and of individually placing in the top six, which they did.
Israel Machovec earned a first in the discus with a throw of 157'11" and a second in the shot put.
Howard Walls earned the title in the 110-meter hurdles with 15.193, while Dan Wiley was runner up in the 3,200 meter and fourth in the 800 meter.
Drew Snelling was fourth in the shot put, and Andrew Fisher finished fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the 400-meter dash and long jump.
Danny Dickinson earned fourth in the 300-meter hurdles, Cole Rabun was fifth in the 400-meter dash, and Alden Fisher came in sixth in the state in pole vault.
The team finished third in the 400 meter relay.
