Scholarship earned

Matthew Choat of Martinez received the Fargason-Gardner Scholarship during awards ceremonies April 13 at Shorter College in Rome, Ga.

The award, in honor of the parents of Dr. and Mrs. Robert G. Gardner, was presented by Shorter's School of Religion and International Programs.

Student honored

Paul Petersen III, a student at Lakeside High School, has been named a U.S. National Award Winner in science by the U.S. Achievement Academy.

He was nominated for the national award by David Arrington, a teacher at Lakeside High.

Paul is the son of Christina and Paul Petersen Jr. of Martinez and the grandson of Dorothy and Paul Petersen Sr. of Martinez and the late Arthur M. Tsikas of Augusta.

The criteria to be selected as a USAA winner are a student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability and recommendation from a teacher or director.

Paul will appear in the USAA official yearbook, which is published nationally.

Brenau who's who

Two Brenau University students and Columbia County residents were included in the 2004 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Selected as national outstanding campus leaders were: Ellis Brooks Cliett and Wendy Renee Jordan, both of Grovetown.

Brenau University is a private university in Gainesville, Ga.

GSU students honored

Georgia Southern University students Jessica Callan, Emily Dabney and Sara Kavsak recently were recognized at the annual Honors Day ceremony.

Callan of Evans is listed among the Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Dabney of Martinez received the Sally T. Gershman Memorial Scholarship. Kavsak of Evans received a Leadership/Service Award.

Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges is one of the longest-standing honor programs in the nation.

The Sally T. Gershman Memorial Scholarship is presented to outstanding women students majoring in European women's history.

The Leadership/Service Award is presented to students for unselfish service to the University and community.

Individual awards were presented to 196 students at the annual Honors Day ceremony. Inductees into various honor societies were also recognized.

Brenau honor

Brenau University student Victoria Henderson, a history/political science senior from Evans, received the Outstanding Graduate in History/Political Science Award at the school's 2004 Honors Convocation ceremony April 22.

Converse SGA

Converse College students went to the polls recently to elect their Student Government Association representatives for the 2004-05 academic year.

Anna Harris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Harris of Martinez has been elected as a Sophomore Class Representative. Anna has currently served with SGA her freshman year at Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.

The Converse College SGA is the second oldest in the Southeast and has been active for more than 90 years. It serves as an umbrella organization for all campus clubs and organizations. SGA also maintains important communication links between the college's administration and the students.
