Dean's List

Billy Byler, of Martinez, was recently named to the Dean's List at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville for the fall 2003 semester. Byler, a junior mass communications major, is son of Bill and Carol Byler and an Augusta Christian Schools graduate. Byler works as associate network producer for Tennessee Titans Radio, broadcast to over 77 southern radio stations, and is sports information director and play-by-play sports broadcaster for Trevecca basketball games on radio stations WNAZ and WENO.

Pre-Teen America finalist

Malia Jo Justice of Martinez was recently selected as a finalist in the Pre-Teen Georgia Scholarship and Recognition Program scheduled for June 11-13 at the Westin Atlanta North Hotel in Atlanta. The program is by invitation only for girls ages 7-12 based on their academic record, awards and honors and participation in outside activities.

Locals attend Scholars' Day

Seven local students were recently invited to attend the second annual Scholars' Day at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Ga. To be invited, students must have earned a 1200 minimum SAT score with a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Attending the event were: Zack Albrecht of Martinez, Lakeside High School; Katie Atkinson of Grovetown, Greenbrier High School; Chad Bain of Evans, Evans High School; Rachael Barkie of Evans, Harlem High School; Kyle Ogletree of Evans, Greenbrier High School; Caleb Schafner of Martinez, Lakeside High School; and Chris Smith of Evans, Greenbrier High School.

At the event, the students examined the university's student organizations and academic and student services and were interviewed for university academic scholarships.

Mining scholarship

Andrew Phillip Hess, an Evans High School senior, was recently awarded a $500 scholarship from the Georgia Mining Foundation funded by Rinker Materials.

Andrew plans to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology in the fall to study Mechanical Engineering. He is active at school including cross-country, swimming, soccer and tennis teams and has served as Student Council president.
