They were on track and they certainly had a field day, but puns don't tell the story of the track-and-field performances turned in by the Augusta Christian Schools squads last weekend at the Gator Relays.
So, let's cut to the chase - the Lions and the Lady Lions were simply unbeatable at Bulloch Academy.
The AC boys and girls posted landslide victories last Saturday in Statesboro, where the Lions and Lady Lions both notched their fourth-straight team titles at the Gator Relays.
"We won the meet decisively, and we were missing several members of our team," AC assistant coach Bryan Wilson said. "Our top two sprinters, Shanice Broadwater and Jordan Little, were unable to attend, as was another of our best sprinters, Hannah Hoover."
High jumper Brittany Little, as well as Sarah Beth McKinney and Helen Cave, also missed the meet, but that didn't stop the AC girls from taking a bite out of the competition at the Gator relays, and at every other meet for that matter.
The Lady Lions, led by University of Georgia signees Rebekah Madebach and Sarah Madebach, have placed first in every event so far this season.
The Lions, meanwhile, have used a combination of speed and strength to dominate opponents in 2004. Dan Wiley, Andrew Fisher, Danny Dickinson Cole Rabun and Drew Snelling have paced AC in the track events, with Israel Machovec topping the field in the shotput and discus events.
Augusta Christian is gearing up for the Region 4-AAA meet on April 20 at Augusta Preparatory Day School, and AC's top athletes will be shooting for championships at the Georgia Independent Schools Association Class AAA state meet April 30 in Albany.
