Area has two high-school all-star in basketball

Posted: Sunday, March 28, 2004

In last week's Bottom Line, I released the names of Columbia County basketball players who were selected to participate in the fifth annual CSRA Middle and High School All-Star Games.

Matt Scott of Lakeside was listed as the county's only high-school player to be selected for the all-star team, but that was incorrect.

Augusta Christian Schools senior Jamal Womble also will suit up for the Georgia team. Last season for the Lions, the 6-foot-6, 200-pound forward averaged 14.7 points and eight rebounds per game.

Dobbs a top Dog

Former Harlem High School baseball standout Johnny Dobbs is making quite a name for himself as a pitcher in the Southeastern Conference.

After a tough first outing on the mound with the University of Georgia, Dobbs has been dominant for the Bulldogs.

Through five appearances, Dobbs boasted a 2-0 record and an earned-run average of 2.38, which is second best on the team.

In 11 innings of work, Dobbs recorded 13 strikeouts and, amazingly, did not walk a single batter - he's the only hurler on the Georgia staff that could make that claim.

Dobbs also had not allowed any home runs, and is holding opponents to a .204 batting average, which is impressive against the competition the Dogs face.

Major moves

The 2004 major-league baseball season is about to begin, which means the minor-league franchises are preparing to kick off this year's campaign as well.

Here is a rundown of where all of the Columbia County players will be starting their seasons this spring.

Todd Greene (Evans) - Colorado Rockies, catcher. Greene currently is playing with the Single-A Dayton Dragons during their exhibition season.

Tydus Meadows (Evans) - Oklahoma Redhawks, AAA (Texas Rangers), outfielder.

James Shanks (Greenbrier) - Wichita Wranglers, AA (Kansas City Royals), outfielder.

Jonathan Johnson (Greenbrier) - Daytona Cubs, High A (Chicago Cubs), outfielder.

B.J. Hawes (Augusta Christian) - Potomac Cannons, High A (Cincinnati Reds), outfielder.

Jordan Belcher (Augusta Christian) - Will probably begin 2004 in the Rookie League with either the Billings Mustangs or the Gulf Coast League Reds (Cincinnati Reds), outfielder.
