Gospel is the soul of sacred music.
Harlem is offering a chance to enjoy four inspiration gospel groups under the warm spring sun at A Day in the Park, a gospel sing from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday at Harlem City Park.
"It is something we don't have here in town," said Kathy Hamm, event coordinator and director of the city's Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism. "There is not a gospel sing that is not church-affiliated. I thought this being a day in the park would bring people to Harlem. They could enjoy the park. Hopefully, we'll have beautiful weather. It'll just make for a nice day and family day."
Four regional groups - New Jerusalem, Christian Harmony, the Georgia Boys and the Trinity Trio - will perform 45-minute sets. Hamm recommends that concert-goers bring blankets and chairs.
Harlem Mayor Scott Dean said he expects a large turnout and a fun day since Harlem is firmly in the Bible Belt.
There is no charge for the event, though a love offering will be accepted for the performing groups, Hamm said.
The event also will feature a live cake auction. Varieties of cakes including red velvet, coconut and chocolate, made by some of Harlem's best bakers, will be auctioned off intermittently throughout the afternoon. Hamm expects to have about 30 cakes available for bidding.
Activities for children, including pony rides, will be available.
"Even if you are not particularly religious per se, A Day in the Park is inviting," Hamm said.
Funds from the auction and concession sales will benefit the Laurel and Hardy Museum. The concert is co-sponsored by the city and Main Street Flowers and Gifts.
If the concert is a success, the city will make it an annual spring event.
"I think it will be a great day," Hamm said. "I think it will be a good day for Harlem to unite with people, for people to meet people and neighbors to see neighbors."
