GISA state swimming
The swim teams at Augusta Christian Schools capped their inaugural season with solid showings at the Georgia Independent School Association state championships, held Jan. 31 at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville.
Augusta Christian's boys and girls teams each placed seventh at the state meet, which featured 22 teams and nearly 300 swimmers.
Individual standouts for AC were Katie York (first in 100 backstroke, third in 200 individual medley) and Will Wright (fourth in 50 freestyle, fifth in 100 backstroke). Augusta Christian also picked up points in relay events - York, Alexis Reese, Barbie Bufford and Katie Harwood combined for fifth in the 200 medley relay; Wright, Brantley Reynolds, Chad Cooper and Stephen Romeo teamed to take sixth in the 200 medley relay; and, Reynolds, Romeo, Wright and Brice Bragg paced AC to a fourth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay.
Free lacrosse clinics
The Family Y and the Aiken-Augusta Lacrosse Club are sponsoring four free Lacrosse clinics this month for boys and girls, ages 10-14. Clinics are scheduled 6-7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21; Monday, Feb. 23; Wed., Feb 25; and Saturday, Feb. 28. The clinics are held at Doctors Hospital Field on Ronald Reagan Drive behind the Kroger in Evans. No equipment and no previous experience are required. On-site registration for the Marshall Branch Youth Lacrosse co-ed team program is available at each clinic. The Youth Lacrosse program session is held Mondays and Wednesdays, March 1 through May 1, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Doctors Hospital field. Boys soccer jamboree
Boys high school soccer gets underway this Friday when the Lakeside Panthers play host to a pre-season jamboree. Along with Lakeside, Evans, Greenbrier and Aquinas will also participate in the jamboree.
Each match will last 30 minutes, and there will be a 10-minute warmup time prior to each match.
Jamboree schedule: 5 p.m., Evans vs. Lakeside; 5:45 p.m., Aquinas vs. Greenbrier; 6:30 p.m. - Evans vs. Greenbrier; 7:15 p.m., Evans vs. Aquinas; 8 p.m., Lakeside vs. Aquinas; 8:45 p.m., Lakeside vs. Greenbrier.
Girls AAU basketball tryouts
The Georgia Sting is holding tryouts for girls AAU basketball teams Feb. 21 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 825 North Belair Road in Evans. The Sting will have tryouts for limited spots in the 15-and-under, 14-and-under, and 13-and-under age division.
