Katie has been named the STAR student for Greenbrier High School, and she named band director Tom Smallwood as her STAR teacher.
Katie, 18, is the daughter of William and Sarah Kulovitz of Evans. She has been accepted at four universities, including Georgetown University and the University of Georgia, but has not decided where she will attend. She plans to major in international economics and continue her musical pursuits.
"Katie is a self-driven student, also a perfectionist," said Smallwood, who was named his school's STAR teacher last year.
Katie is the first-chair clarinet player and drum major and is finishing her sixth year in band. She is in the jazz band and orchestra and was first named a drum major in 10th grade. She also plays with the Augusta Wind Symphony. She credits Smallwood with changing her world by recognizing her potential.
"In ninth grade I was shy and didn't want to be a part of school activities. Being selected as a drum major in my 10th grade year brought me out. Now I'm no longer quiet and shy," she said with a laugh.
Smallwood said she has the maturity required for such a leadership position.
"She goes forward whether I'm here or not," he said.
She is a member of the Beta Club, French Club and the National Honor Society.
