Bob Wilson, the 17-year-old son of William and Joan Wilson of Martinez, is described by his STAR teacher as a "great kid with great potential."
"He's definitely on the quiet side in terms of being vocal in the community of students," said his teacher Timothy Shafer. "When Bob does speak up, you know it's something valuable that we need to hear."
Shafer was chosen as STAR teacher for his enthusiasm about his work.
"He shares his enthusiasm with his students, said Bob, who plays baseball at Augusta Prep. "He generates a lot of interest in math and conducts classes that are challenging, highly interactive, stimulating and fun."
Bob said Shafer also displays his talents as coach of both the school's math and baseball teams.
"Students are inspired by personal challenge, high expectations and team spirit," he said.
A member of the school's swim, baseball and math teams, Bob also is a member of the National Honor Society and the Gaming Club. He serves as a volunteer for the technologies department at Augusta Prep. Outside of school, Bob's interests expand to films, reading, travel, skiing and water sports.
"Bob has been a star in the classroom and a journeyman on the athletic field," said Shafer, who taught Bob calculus last year and is his statistics and advanced calculus teacher this year.
"Following high school, I am planning to attend a liberal arts college in the Northeast and attend graduate school," said Bob, who is a certified lifeguard with the American Red Cross and works at local pools during the summer. "Right now, my areas of interest will be to study math, computer science and physical sciences in college, but I plan to explore as many new areas of study as possible before deciding on a major."
