The Harlem High School Drama Department's Highland Fling Gala, scheduled for Thursday, has been canceled.

Yard waste
Columbia County's landfill does not accept yard waste, such as tree limbs that fell during the recent ice storm. Such debris may be taken to Sample & Son, 5944 Columbia Road, 1.5 miles west of Patriots Park. The private landfill is open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday. Construction delay

Legal help
Staff from the Georgia Legal Services Program will offer free legal help on a first-come, first-served basis Feb. 17 to senior citizens 60 or older with civil issues. Retinopathy screenings
The next Diabetic retinopathy screenings, sponsored by MCG Health Systems, Emory Eye Center and the Georgia Department of Human Resources, will be Feb. 18 at the Harlem/Grovetown Health Department. Screenings will be Feb. 24 at the Health Department office in Evans, and additional screenings at each site will be held through June.
Poster contest
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is sponsoring a national water safety poster contest open to fourth-graders.
Students are asked to design a poster with a water safety message. Local winners will advance to region competition, and those winners will compete in the national contest.
Local winners will receive a water safety kit and other items for their class. The top local winner will receive a life jacket.

Winds concert
The Savannah River Winds will perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Maxwell Arts Performing Center at Augusta State University. The band's performance scheduled for Jan. 27 at North Augusta High School was canceled because of the ice storm. Admission to the ASU performance is free.
The band also will perform at the Hopeland Gardens concert series in Aiken, S.C. at 7 p.m. May 17.
The ensemble is composed of band directors, university professors, musicians from various professional fields and college students from Georgia and South Carolina.

Law academy
The Columbia County Sheriff's Office will hold a Citizen's Law Enforcement Academy, beginning March 4.
Participants will be given an insight to the everyday operations of the sheriff's office as well as firearms training, which will include live fire at the sheriff's office shooting range.
The free course is offered every Thursday evening between 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. for nine weeks, and is open to Columbia County residents at least 18 years of age.

The Columbia County property tax division of the Tax Commissioner's Office is now open in its new Evans location.
The office moved from Appling to Building C of the Columbia County Government Complex, 630 Ronald Reagan Drive. The office's Appling location, 1959 Appling-Harlem Highway, is now open on Tuesdays only.

Chorale auditions

Senior activities
The Bessie Thomas Community Center, 5913 Euchee Creek Drive, Grovetown, offers daily events for 55 and over residents of Columbia County including Bingo on Tuesday and Thursday, ceramics and other arts and crafts, trivia, devotionals and field trips. Transportation to and from the center is provided by the county's Rural Transportation Department. Call in advance to schedule the ride. Harlem day care
The Harlem Neighborhood Development Daycare Academy, a nonprofit organization helping low-income families get financial assistance for day care, is accepting new pupils.
The program is from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday at the center at 280 West Forrest St., Harlem. Children age 6 weeks to 12 years are eligible. Activities include field trips, computer classes, games, movies and more.

The following Columbia County elementary schools have newspaper and magazine recycling bins for public use: South Columbia, Grovetown, Bel Air, Evans, Riverside, Brookwood, North Columbia, North Harlem and Stevens Creek elementary schools, and Evans High School.
Recycling bins also are at Wesley United Methodist Church on North Belair Road, Marvin United Methodist Church on Wheeler Road, St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church on Pleasant Home Road and at Savannah Rapids Pavilion.
Aluminum can recycling centers, to benefit the Southeastern Firefighters Burn Foundation, are located at Martinez Fire Department station 2 on Gibbs Road, Station 3 on Furys Ferry Road and Station 4 on Oakley-Pirkle Road.
