More volunteers needed to monitor waterways

Editor:

There are five Columbia County teams that have adopted streams to provide information about their quality to local and state authorities. These adopted streams are Bettys Branch, Crawford Creek, Jones Creek, Reed Creek and Euchee Creek. Each team has a monthly responsibility to take physical and chemical measurements. Every three months there is a need to collect biological data as well.

During 2003 the teams began their efforts, and will continue in 2004. During this same period, and more so during 2004, they will have the responsibilities of developing more comprehensive ecological studies of the basins served by the streams.

I now encourage more people to join the effort for three reasons: First, extra help is needed on the days of biological studies; second, new teams are needed for additional assessments of Euchee Creek and other creeks like Kiokee and Little Kiokee; third, our county officials need the data right now for reference in its compliance and permit-continuation reports.

Younger people aged 12 or older can be very helpful. If anyone is interested in joining a team directly without certification, or in getting certified, or in attending an after-school program in which water studies and related topics are undertaken, they or a parent should contact Metro Augusta Clean and Beautiful at 261-390, or me at 868-0296 or by e-mail, jopagr@mindspring.com.
