Principal resigns abruptly

Evans Middle School Principal Myrel Seigler immediately resigned from his job Wednesday, leaving officials to look for a replacement in the middle of the school year.

School Superintendent Tommy Price said he received a letter from Mr. Seigler that cited personal reasons for leaving his job.

Assistant Principal Vanessa Watkins will be in charge of the school until a permanent replacement is found, Mr. Price said.

"It's an unusual time of the year to find someone outside of the system who would be unencumbered by a contract," he said.

Mr. Seigler began his post at Evans Middle as principal in August 2000. Before then, he was former assistant principal at Greenbrier High School.

Mr. Seigler began his career as a special-education teacher at Evans Middle School when it was Evans Junior High School.

A phone call to Mr. Seigler's house Wednesday night went unanswered.
