As reported 35 years ago in The Columbia News, Jan. 11, 1968:

Schools join forces

Columbia County has joined three other area school systems to term an educational services program designed to bring better education to youngsters in the participating counties.

John Pierce Blanchard, Columbia County school superintendent, said the Columbia, McDuffie, Lincoln and Wilkes systems have jointly hired a staff of five "subject-matter specialists" to upgrade education.

Drive nears goal

An appeal was made to Columbia County residents to lend a helping hand to the annual Christmas Seal drive in an effort to reach its goal.

With only $4,000 more necessary to top this year's goal of $30,000, Tom Stuart and Maj. Bob Jackson (retired) urged all of those persons who haven't answered their Christmas Seal letters of appeal to do so today.

Trees arrive

Mrs. Al Nagy, chairman of the Flowering Tree Committee of the Columbia County Beautification Program, announced that dogwood and redbud trees are being delivered this week. She asked all who ordered these trees to go to the county forestry office on Columbia Road as soon as possible to pick up their order.

Nagy also said orders for Crape Myrtle are being received until Jan. 17, 1968. She said more than 5,000 dogwood and redbud would be delivered to Columbia County homeowners this week.

Planting flowering trees is a big part of the county's Beautification Program. Nagy pointed out that if all home owners would plant flowering trees and help keep the county clean, that we would have a beautiful county overnight.

Kathie Lovett has been selected as Miss FHA of the Month at Evans High School. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Lovett of Evans.

Firefighter honored

For this exemplary commitment the members of Team 3 presented Conner with a complete firefighting uniform. Sgt. Burl Keen is assistant chief of Team 3.
