Photos demonstrate destruction of Evans field

After looking at the pictures in Sunday's Augusta Chronicle, I dusted off The News-Times of Oct. 29. In it, a letter from Jeffery Abplanalp should get everyone in Columbia County fired up about the destruction of the Evans field behind Kroger, by the four-wheelers and motocrossers.

While Doctor's Hospital has been very generous over the years to the people of Columbia County, this is, after all, private property. The pictures in Sunday's Chronicle show the destruction caused by the off-road vehicles.

Take a good look at the before and after shots. I have personally witnessed kids running alongside the road. If they should flip out onto the road and get hit by a car, the parents would be the first to try and blame the motorist. If the parents of these kids have enough disposable income to buy Johnny or Janie an off-road vehicle, they should also buy some land for their child to ride said vehicle.

Doctor's Hospital should no longer allow any negative impact activities on this property. They should inform the Sheriff's Office that they now have jurisdiction, just like they have done at Kroger.

The Doctor's Hospital field is a great place for soccer, football, baseball, model airplanes, dog training, golf and hot-air balloons. It's also a pretty good place for a county celebration.

But it has been abused by a few uncaring parents and kids, who may not even be Columbia County residents, and the time has come for it to stop.

Maybe in time, the land can heal itself to look more like the before picture taken in 1998.
