Evans cross country
The Evans High School cross-country teams fared well at the Region 7-AAAAA meet last weekend in Decatur. The Lady Knights placed fourth and the Knights finished third. Thanks to their performances in a tough region, both squads earned a spot in the sectional qualifying this weekend at Gainesville College. The Knights and Lady Knights will run to secure a berth in the Class AAAAA state championship on Nov. 8 in Carrollton.
Cheer competition
Evans High School has been chosen as the site for the East Georgia Cheer & Dance Open, a Cheer Ltd. CANAM 2004 Cheer and Dance qualifier competition, to be held by Southern Mpact Athletics. The event is Saturday , and cheerleading and dance teams from across the state are invited to compete for a bid to the CANAM 2004 International Cheer and Dance Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C. on March 19-21.
Niki Milford will coordinate the Cheer Ltd. regional event, which begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Evans High. Nationally certified judges will score the teams. Competition is available in more than 60 divisions, from pee wee through collegiate, including high school varsity, all-stars and recreation teams.
Individual cheerleaders, dancers and partner stunt teams may also choose to compete this weekend for a bid to the 2004 International Cheerleader Championships, 2004 International Dancer Championships and the 2004 International Partner Stunt Championships, held in conjunction with the CANAM 2004 International Cheer and Dance Championships.

Softball tryouts
The Georgia Rockers girls fastpitch softball organization will be holding its tryouts for 12-and-under, 14-and-under, 16-and-under, and 18-and-under teams for the 2004 season. Tryouts will be at Patriots Park Nov. 8 at 9:30 a.m. Tryouts are for all current players and new players. Recreation registration
The Columbia County Recreation Department is holding 2004 basketball and winter soccer registration through Saturday. Registration is at Patriots Park administrative office only. Weekday hours for registration are from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration forms are available at www.co.columbia.ga.us.com. For more information call 863-7523.
Volleyball tryouts

Hall of Fame award
The Columbia County Recreation Advisory Board is presently accepting applications for the third annual Columbia County Recreation & Leisure Services Department Hall of Fame Award. Applications will be accepted until Friday.
The Recreation & Leisure Services Department will receive one or two individuals, groups or businesses for induction, whom have either come through the program or had direct impact on the department. Inductees each year will be enshrined with a picture and plaque of their accomplishments placed at Patriots Park Gymnasium Complex.
Nominations may be made from the general public, the Recreation Advisory Board or the Recreation staff. Individuals submitting nominations must provide a typed page bio on the individual, group or business. Nominations must be typed with number 12 type and double spaced. The Recreation Advisory Board will review all applications and select one or two inductees at its November meeting.
Individuals must meet the following criteria for induction: individual must have played, coached or worked with the department at least four years; individual must have made a direct impact on the recreation program, while either playing, coaching or working with the department; individuals that have participated within the program must have gone on to establish themselves in an outstanding way; a business or group must have had a direct impact on a specific program or the department for at least five consecutive years; and, a meritorious nomination may be made with approval of the Recreation Advisory Board and the Board of Commissioners.
