Halloween Regatta takes to the lake

Posted: Wednesday, October 15, 2003

Summer is over, but that hasn't stopped a group of sailing enthusiasts from taking to the waters of Thurmond Lake.

The Augusta Sailing Club held its 49th annual Halloween Regatta on Saturday and Sunday at the lake.

"We don't mind if it's a little chilly, so long as there is wind," said Jeff Annis, one of the organizers of the regatta. "As a matter of fact, this is sailing season. We'll have races going on nearly every other weekend from now until the end of the season."

Annis said nearly 100 sailors turned out for the event, some from as far away as New York and Wisconsin.

Boat races were held Saturday and Sunday in 10 different classes. The sailor with the fastest cumulative time from both days in each class won.

As of Monday, winning results had not been released.
